MUTT AND JEFF
BIG BOOK
by Bud Fisher
An Expansive Hardcover Collection of Classic Comic-Strip Misadventures
Published by Cupples & Leon Company in June 1926, Mutt and Jeff Big Book gathers a substantial selection of Bud Fisher’s popular newspaper comic strips, primarily from the years 1920 through 1924. Its large hardcover format distinguishes it from the publisher’s regular Mutt and Jeff collections.
Rather than presenting one continuous novel-length adventure, the volume brings together numerous independent comic episodes featuring the famously mismatched Mutt and Jeff. Their schemes, disagreements, misunderstandings, and unexpected reversals provide the foundation for the collection’s humor.

About the
book
Mutt and Jeff Big Book presents an extensive selection of comic-strip episodes featuring one of the most recognizable partnerships in early American newspaper comics.
Mutt is the tall, ambitious, argumentative member of the pair. He frequently believes that he has discovered a brilliant way to make money, solve a problem, impress someone, or gain an advantage.
Jeff is considerably shorter and serves as Mutt’s unpredictable counterpart. His unusual reasoning, literal interpretations, and unexpected reactions regularly transform Mutt’s carefully arranged plans into complete confusion.
Across the collection, the pair become involved in employment, travel, gambling, money-making schemes, social situations, practical jokes, disguises, inventions, romantic complications, and disagreements with one another.
The anthology format allows each episode to present its own comic situation while retaining the contrasting personalities and entertaining rivalry at the center of the series.
