by Ian T. M. Mungall

A Story of Survival, Broken Friendship, and Finding a Way Back After Everything Falls Apart

After a devastating attack on the United States, former childhood best friends Autumn Worthy and Kennedy Holt are forced to take refuge together inside a forgotten Cold War fallout bunker. For 500 days, they remain underground, cut off from their families and uncertain of what still exists beyond the shelter.

When they finally emerge, the world they knew is gone. As they search for loved ones and a path forward, Autumn and Kennedy must also confront the pain, resentment, and unresolved history that once destroyed their friendship. Their struggle becomes not only about surviving a broken world, but deciding whether the bond between them can survive too.

About
the book

The world ended around them. Now two former best friends must decide whether the bond between them can survive what comes next.

What Happened to Us: Book One follows Autumn Worthy and Kennedy Holt, two women who were inseparable as children before their friendship fractured during their teenage years. Years later, a devastating attack on the United States forces them back together under circumstances neither could have imagined.

With the outside world collapsing around them, Autumn and Kennedy find refuge inside a long-forgotten Cold War-era fallout bunker. What begins as shelter quickly becomes a test of endurance, trust, and everything left unresolved between them. For 500 days, the two women remain trapped beneath the surface, separated from their families and uncertain about what remains outside.

When they finally emerge, the world they knew has disappeared.

Their journey becomes a search for lost loved ones, safety, and some sense of a future, but surviving the devastated landscape is only part of the challenge. Autumn and Kennedy must also confront years of hurt, resentment, misunderstanding, and the circumstances that destroyed the friendship that once defined their lives.

Autumn enters the story with a background in medicine, having built a career as a trauma nurse after growing up in Baton Rouge. Kennedy’s path has been far less stable, shaped by a troubled home life, bullying, interrupted education, and years spent surviving largely on her own terms. Their sharply different experiences create tension, but they also bring distinct strengths to their struggle for survival.

At its core, What Happened to Us is as much about the collapse of a friendship as the collapse of civilization. The devastated world forces two people who once knew each other better than anyone else to reconsider what happened between them and whether something broken for years can still be repaired.

Why Read
What Happened to Us: Book One?

Five hundred days underground. A shattered world above. And one friendship that may be worth fighting for.

What Happened to Us offers a character-driven approach to post-apocalyptic fiction. Rather than focusing only on catastrophe and survival mechanics, the story places the emotional relationship between Autumn and Kennedy at its center. The danger outside the bunker is matched by the unresolved history carried by the two women inside it.

Readers who enjoy dystopian fiction, post-apocalyptic survival, damaged friendships, emotionally complex protagonists, second chances, and stories about human connection under extreme pressure are likely to find its combination of interpersonal drama and survival storytelling particularly appealing.

The novel also uses shifts between past and present to reveal how Autumn and Kennedy’s relationship developed, how it fractured, and why their shared history matters so deeply once they are forced to depend on each other again. The result is a story about survival in two senses: staying alive in a changed world and determining whether a relationship buried by years of pain can survive as well.
