My Life with Ndoto: Exploring Africa in a Forty-Year-Old Land Rover

by Teresa O’Kane

A Story of Adventure, Love, Loss, and Following a Dream Across Africa

Teresa O’Kane and her husband Scott set out on a yearlong journey from Cape Town toward northern Kenya and back, traveling nearly 48,000 kilometers in Ndoto, their 1973 Series III Land Rover. The route carries them through southern and eastern Africa, across deserts, wildlife reserves, remote roads, and unfamiliar borders.

Along the way, mechanical breakdowns, difficult terrain, changing weather, conflict, wildlife encounters, and unexpected human connections transform the trip into something far deeper than an overland adventure. Told with humor, honesty, and affection for Africa, the memoir becomes a reflection on resilience, partnership, loss, discovery, and the value of choosing experiences over possessions.

About
the book

Sometimes the greatest adventure begins when a dream gets four wheels, a rooftop tent, and an open road.

My Life with Ndoto follows Teresa O’Kane and her husband Scott on an extraordinary yearlong journey across Africa in Ndoto, their 1973 Series III Land Rover. Ndoto means “dream” in Swahili, an appropriate name for the aging vehicle that becomes transportation, home, companion, and occasional mechanical headache during their approximately 48,000-kilometer adventure.

Beginning in southern Africa, Teresa and Scott leave conventional safari travel behind and head into a far less predictable world of rough roads, remote camps, wildlife encounters, border crossings, mechanical breakdowns, and everyday interactions with people along the way.

Their route carries them through South Africa’s national parks, Zimbabwe, Botswana’s Kalahari, Namibia’s deserts, Zambia, Tanzania, Burundi, post-genocide Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Malawi, and Mozambique. Along the journey, broken gear shifts and failing transmissions become nearly as memorable as elephants, rhinos, hippos, spectacular landscapes, and isolated communities.

But this is more than a chronicle of difficult roads and adventurous travel.

O’Kane writes candidly about poverty, health, corruption, environmental pressures, conflict, human resilience, love, grief, friendship, and the uneasy realities encountered when traveling far beyond conventional tourist routes. The result is both a personal memoir and an intimate portrait of life on the road through southern and eastern Africa.

Ndoto itself gradually becomes one of the book’s central personalities. From breakdowns and damaged parts to a memorable encounter with a honey badger, the forty-year-old Land Rover repeatedly tests its passengers while also opening doors to places, people, and experiences conventional travel might never provide.

Alongside the storytelling, O’Kane incorporates practical insights for readers interested in independent African overland travel and encourages them to pursue their own “Safari Jema” — their own good journey.

Why Read
My Life with Ndoto?

Two travelers. One forty-year-old Land Rover. Forty-eight thousand kilometers of Africa—and a dream too compelling to leave unexplored.

My Life with Ndoto will appeal especially to readers who enjoy travel memoirs, African exploration, overland adventure, classic Land Rovers, wildlife, cultural encounters, and true stories about leaving familiar comforts behind.

Rather than describing Africa from the controlled environment of conventional tourism, O’Kane places readers inside the practical reality of an extended self-drive expedition: rough roads, border crossings, unexpected hospitality, mechanical failures, wildlife, uncertainty, humor, loss, and moments of extraordinary beauty. The book combines adventure with personal reflection and an evident affection for the people, landscapes, and wildlife encountered along the way.

The book has also received independent recognition. It was a 2020 Next Generation Indie Book Awards finalist in Travel/Travel Guide, and O’Kane reported that it won the 2020 Kindle Book Award for Non-Fiction.
